The Fillers
Spee-Dee had several machines on display. The main attractions this year were our model 3600 Auger Filler equipped with our innovative split hopper and horizontal infeed screw (pictured to the right), and our Advanced Volumetric System with in-line checkweigher (below).

The Tech Talks
Spee-Dee and our CAMA partners (Dorner Conveyor, Morisson   Container Handling, and FoxIV) sponsored “Tech Talks”, an informative series of mini seminars led by industry experts, covering various aspects of the packaging industry. The sessions were held right in the CAMA booth (you can see the presentation area in the photo to the left). The tech talks consisted of an approximately 10 minute presentation by the speaker followed by a Q&A session.

Spee-Dee’s very own Mark Navin discussed dry filling success and used his extensive knowledge of auger filling  to give audience members advice on increasing accuracy.

Spee-Dee also invited Dennis Glick from the USDA to discuss sanitary design requirements for auger fillers. Dennis Glick is a Facility and Equipment Review Specialist for the USDA.

The Hospitality
The CAMA group also sponsored a hospitality area in the center of the CAMA booth and enjoyed refreshments at the end of each day at the show. It was a great time to relax and talk with our visitors and packaging partners at the end of a long show day.

The Rest of the Show
With over 2,000 exhibitors, Pack Expo is the largest packaging trade show in the world. Spee-Dee was honored to have our Volumetric Cup Fillers displayed in four other exhibitors’ booths. The model CBS cup filler was interfaced with equipment in the HayssenSandiacre, Packaging Technologies & Inspection, Seal Strip, and Zip-Pak booths.

Packaging World magazine launched an industry-based program, 2010 Leadership in Packaging Award, back in January of this year to recognize excellent business leaders in the packaging machinery and material and service suppliers industry. Among the 6,000 votes that were tallied in the online competition between January and September, 2010, participants, which included both end users and industry peers, had the opportunity to vote for their favorite manufacturer in 20 different categories. Of all the votes that were casted, we are proud to announce Spee-Dee as the 2010 category leader for Filling for Dry Products, Capping and Induction Sealing.

• Company: Fortune 500 Pharmaceutical Company
• Objective: Replace the existing filling line with an integrated system to permit net weighing of all containers and the gathering and storage of data on all filling activity for the review of the client’s Quality Control Department.
• Situation: The system in place used four lanes, each with a clutch/brake filler. Offline sample check weighing was conducted on a periodic basis. If an incorrect weight was found, the entire lot had to be rejected, resulting in excessive and costly product giveaway. Total system output of all four lanes was 240 vials/minute.
• Solution: Spee-Dee® installed a two lane system where vials were driven through a three stage process using a servo driven timing screw. First, the containers stopped on a load cell, used to tare the vial. Then they were filled by the auger and placed on a second load cell to be weighed. The tare weight was deducted from the gross weight, yielding a true net weight for each vial. The net weight was electronically transmitted to the auger for adjustment. This information was also fed over DH+ to the client’s centralized data collection system. Line speeds for each lane were 120/minute for a total of 240/minute for the entire system.
• Bottom line: The same output speed was reached using two augers instead of four, however the real savings was realized from the reduction in bad weights and the ability to accept or reject each individual vial. This reduced profit eroding rejected product levels by more than 10%.

• Company: Fortune 500 Food Processor
• Objective: Improve existing fill speeds while reducing costly line downtime.
• Situation: The client was using a vertical form/fill/seal machine with a combination scale to fill bags with a crumb product. Speeds of a respectable 40/minute were common, however the greatest problem was messy product build-up on the scale, which caused inaccurate fills and resulted in substantial downtime for cleaning. Line maintenance costs were also excessive.
• Solution: Spee-Dee® installed a new Servo 3500 Digitronic® Direct Drive Auger Filler in place of the scales. In order to be compatible with other equipment in the plant, an Allen-Bradley PLC and PanelView were used for the control system.
• Bottom line: The auger system installed by Spee-Dee enabled the material to be completely enclosed from processing until it entered the bag, addressing product build-up issues. Average line speeds improved to 70/minute, with downtime reduced to near 0%.
