Sturtevant, Wis. — James P. Navin, President of Spee-Dee® Packaging Machinery, Inc., announced that the Advanced Volumetric System (AVS) continues to be a highly efficient and economical equipment alternative to combination scales for companies that are challenged by products that shift density during a packaging run.  “Our innovative Spee-Dee Advanced Volumetric System was the first in the industry to control both weight and volume in dry filling.  It has become an ideal solution for an increasingly broader range of products, including cereal, nuts, pet food, coffee and candy,” he revealed.

Timm Johnson, Vice President, Sales/Marketing, explained that one of the many advantages of the AVS is its very low profile.  “Traditional combination scales demand a significant amount of production space because they require a mezzanine.  The AVS is only 40 inches tall, so it is more easily integrated within even the most compact of packaging environments.  Additional space savings are realized because the system sits directly on the bagger,” he stated.

In explaining the technology underlying the Advanced Volumetric System, Johnson itemized the efficiency gains customers realize from the Spee-Dee-Set Volume Adjustment Motor and in-line scale configuration.  “Package weights gathered by the in-line scale are fed back to the PLC, averaged and compared to target weights.  The PLC is programmed to quickly and precisely regulate volume utilizing the servo volume adjustment, thereby preventing fills from falling below minimum as well as eliminating overfills.  The results are greatly improved repeatability and a reduction in target weight, as well as a dramatic decrease in product giveaway,” he concluded.

The Spee-Dee® Advanced Volumetric System, which utilizes a single Allen-Bradley PLC to control both the filler and scale, boasts a completely tool-less design.  This enables the unit to be easily and quickly disassembled so that cleaning and product changeover operations are accomplished within a matter of minutes, resulting in maximum uptime.  Components for the filling and weighing operations are non-proprietary to minimize replacement cost and ensure parts availability.  There are also fewer components within the unit, further reducing maintenance expense.

To promote operator safety, the unit features a safety lock system and is fully guarded with a plexiglass and stainless steel enclosure.
